FAQ

About Subtle

What is Subtle?

Subtle makes candles for people who like fragrance, just not too much of it.

Our scents are designed to sit quietly in a room rather than dominate it. They create atmosphere without becoming the atmosphere.

What makes a Subtle candle different?

Most scented candles are designed to make their presence known. We take the opposite approach.

Subtle candles are intentionally restrained, with balanced fragrance profiles designed to complement your space rather than overpower it.

Think less “What is that smell?” and more “This room feels really good.”

Are Subtle candles unscented?

No. They’re scented, just intentionally less intense.

You’ll notice the fragrance, but it shouldn’t feel like the candle entered the room before you did.

Are Subtle candles lightly scented?

Yes, although we think of them as thoughtfully scented rather than simply “weak.”

Each fragrance is developed to create a noticeable atmosphere while maintaining the softer scent experience that defines Subtle.

Why would I want a less strongly scented candle?

Because stronger isn’t always better.

A candle shares a room with dinner, coffee, perfume, flowers, people, pets, fresh air and everything else happening in your life. We think fragrance works best when it knows how to coexist with all of it.

Will I still be able to smell it?

Yes.

Subtle isn’t about making fragrance disappear. It’s about finding the point where you can enjoy a scent without feeling surrounded by it.

Your experience will also vary depending on room size, airflow, how long the candle has been burning and your personal sensitivity to fragrance.

Fragrance

What fragrances does Subtle offer?

Our initial collection includes:

Fresh Linen
Cotton, fresh air, pale wood and soft musk.

Vanilla + White Tea
Vanilla, white tea, bergamot and soft musk.

After Rain
Rainwater, green leaves, wet stone and soft woods.

Lavender
A soft, modern interpretation of lavender designed around the same restrained philosophy as the rest of the collection.

What does Fresh Linen smell like?

Clean air, soft cotton and a room that feels freshly reset.

Fresh Linen is light and airy, with pale woods and soft musk adding just enough warmth.

It’s clean without smelling aggressively like detergent.

What does Vanilla + White Tea smell like?

Soft vanilla balanced by airy white tea, fresh bergamot and subtle musk.

It’s smooth and comforting without becoming sugary, bakery-like or overly sweet.

What does After Rain smell like?

The feeling of stepping outside just after the rain stops.

Fresh rainwater and green leaves meet cool mineral notes of wet stone and quiet woods.

It’s fresh and atmospheric rather than aquatic or cologne-like.

What does Lavender smell like?

A softer, more modern version of lavender.

Rather than an intensely herbal or spa-like lavender fragrance, ours is designed to feel calm, clean and understated.

Are your scents sweet?

Some fragrances contain naturally warmer or softer notes, but Subtle fragrances are intentionally balanced to avoid becoming overly sweet.

Even Vanilla + White Tea was created to feel airy and sophisticated rather than gourmand.

Are the fragrances strong?

Not by traditional scented-candle standards.

That’s intentional.

Our fragrance level is designed to create a softer scent presence that works particularly well for bedrooms, living spaces, dining areas and anywhere you don’t want fragrance competing for attention.

What does “scent throw” mean?

Scent throw describes how much fragrance a candle releases into the surrounding space.

Cold throw is what you smell when the candle isn’t burning.

Hot throw is what you smell while the candle is burning.

Subtle candles intentionally prioritize a controlled, balanced hot throw rather than maximum fragrance output.

How large of a room will a Subtle candle scent?

Room size, ceiling height, airflow and ventilation all affect how fragrance travels.

Because Subtle candles are intentionally restrained, you’ll experience them most clearly in normal residential spaces rather than very large, open commercial-style rooms.

For a stronger presence in a large open space, you can burn more than one candle.

Why can I smell my candle more on some days than others?

Airflow, humidity, room temperature, open windows, HVAC systems and even your own sense of smell can change how noticeable a fragrance feels.

It’s completely normal for the same candle to feel slightly different from one environment to another.

Can you become nose-blind to a candle?

Yes.

When you’re exposed to the same fragrance for a while, your brain can temporarily become less aware of it. This is sometimes called olfactory fatigue.

Leaving the room for a few minutes and coming back can help reset your perception of the scent.

Can I layer different Subtle fragrances?

Absolutely.

Because our fragrances are intentionally restrained, they’re particularly well suited to scent layering.

Fresh Linen and After Rain can create an especially fresh atmosphere, while Vanilla + White Tea can add warmth to cleaner fragrances.

Burning Your Candle

How should I burn my Subtle candle for the first time?

For the first burn, allow the melted wax to reach close to the edges of the vessel before extinguishing the candle.

This helps establish an even melt pool and can reduce tunneling over the life of the candle.

Never leave a burning candle unattended.

How long should I burn my candle at a time?

We recommend burning your candle for approximately 2–4 hours at a time.

Longer burns can cause the vessel to become excessively hot and may affect how the candle performs.

Should I trim the wick?

Yes.

Trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch before each burn.

A properly trimmed wick helps maintain a controlled flame and reduces soot, mushrooming and uneven burning.

Why is my wick mushrooming?

A small carbon buildup at the end of a candle wick can happen naturally during burning.

Extinguish the candle, allow it to cool and trim the wick before relighting it.

Why is my candle tunneling?

Tunneling occurs when wax burns down the center of a candle without melting sufficiently toward the edges.

It often happens when the candle is extinguished too quickly during its first few burns.

Allowing enough time for an even melt pool can help prevent it.

Why is there wax left on the sides?

A small amount of residual wax can be normal, particularly early in the candle’s life.

As the candle continues to burn, the vessel retains more heat and some remaining wax may melt down naturally.

Why is the flame too high?

Extinguish the candle and allow it to cool.

Before relighting, trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch.

An excessively long wick is one of the most common reasons for a larger flame.

Why is the flame small?

A flame can become smaller if the wick has been trimmed too short or if wax is restricting the wick.

Allow the candle to cool completely before making any adjustments.

Can I leave the candle burning while I leave the room?

No.

Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Keep burning candles within sight and away from children, pets, drafts and flammable materials.

When should I stop burning the candle?

Stop using the candle when approximately 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel.

Burning a candle all the way to the base can cause the vessel to become excessively hot.

Candle Care

How do I get the longest life from my candle?

A few simple habits make a difference:

  • Trim the wick before each burn.
  • Burn long enough to create an even melt pool.
  • Avoid excessively long burn sessions.
  • Keep the candle away from strong drafts.
  • Allow the wax to cool completely between burns.
  • Stop burning when approximately 1/2 inch of wax remains.
Should I put the lid on immediately after extinguishing the candle?

Let the candle cool before replacing the lid.

The lid is primarily intended to protect the candle from dust and debris between burns.

How should I store my candle?

Store your candle somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.

Extended heat or sunlight can affect the appearance of both the wax and fragrance over time.

Candle Safety

Where should I place my candle?

Always place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface.

Keep it away from curtains, bedding, books, paper, plants and anything else that can catch fire.

Can I burn a candle near an open window?

Avoid strong drafts.

Airflow from windows, fans and vents can cause uneven burning, flickering, smoking or a larger flame.

Are candles safe around children and pets?

Burning candles should always be kept somewhere children and pets cannot reach or knock them over.

Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Can the candle vessel become hot?

Yes.

Any candle vessel can become hot while burning. Avoid touching or moving the candle while it is lit or while the wax is still melted.

Your Subtle Vessel

Can I reuse the candle vessel?

Yes.

Once the candle is completely finished, the vessel can be cleaned and repurposed.

How do I clean the vessel?

Allow the remaining wax to cool completely.

Remove the remaining wax and wick hardware, then clean the vessel carefully with warm water and soap.

Do not pour melted wax down your sink or drain.

What can I use the empty vessel for?

Whatever feels useful.

Pens. Matches. Cotton swabs. Small objects that somehow never have a home.

We designed Subtle to feel like something you wouldn’t immediately want to throw away.

Ordering

How much does a Subtle candle cost?

Subtle candles are $120 each.

Why does a Subtle candle cost $120?

Subtle is designed as an elevated fragrance and home object, not simply a way to make a room smell stronger.

The price reflects the fragrance development, materials, vessel, manufacturing and level of consideration that goes into each candle.

The goal isn’t more fragrance.

It’s a better candle.

Can I purchase Subtle candles individually?

Yes.

Each fragrance is available as its own individual candle.

Choosing a Fragrance

Which Subtle candle should I start with?

If you’re not sure, start with the atmosphere you want.

Fresh Linen
For clean, airy, freshly reset spaces.

Vanilla + White Tea
For something soft, warm and comforting without being sweet.

After Rain
For something fresh, green, mineral and atmospheric.

Lavender
For something calm, soft and quietly relaxing.

Which fragrance is the cleanest?

Fresh Linen.

It’s built around cotton, fresh air, pale woods and soft musk.

Which fragrance is the warmest?

Vanilla + White Tea.

Vanilla gives it softness and warmth, while white tea and bergamot keep the fragrance light.

Which fragrance is the freshest?

Fresh Linen and After Rain both live on the fresher side of the collection, but in different ways.

Fresh Linen feels clean and airy.

After Rain feels green, mineral and outdoorsy.

Which fragrance is best for a bedroom?

Fresh Linen, Lavender and Vanilla + White Tea are particularly well suited to bedrooms because of their softer profiles.

Which fragrance is best for a living room?

Any of them.

For something clean, choose Fresh Linen.

For warmth, choose Vanilla + White Tea.

For something atmospheric, choose After Rain.

For calm, choose Lavender.

Which fragrance is best for a kitchen or dining room?

We generally recommend fresher, less sweet fragrances around food.

Fresh Linen and After Rain are particularly easy choices because they add atmosphere without competing heavily with what you’re eating.
